Cookery

Inspired by popular programmes such as MasterChef and The Great British Bake Off, the Cookery section of Eisteddfod Guernsey celebrates the art of cooking, baking, and culinary creativity for all ages. Whether you enjoy baking cakes at home, entertaining family and friends, or have a specialist interest in Guernsey’s traditional dishes, the Cookery section offers classes to suit every passion. Categories span all aspects of baking and preserves, from Guernsey favourites and fresh bread to cake decorating and intricate pastry work. Entries are welcomed for preserve classes, including jams, jellies, marmalades, curds, and sauces, alongside fun competitions such as Housewives’ Choice and Gentlemen’s Choice. Afternoon tea lovers can take part in scone, biscuit, and pastry classes, while young bakers have dedicated sections for ages 10 and under, 11–14, and 15–17. Certificates are awarded to all entries achieving 75 points or more, with several trophies presented to winners across the classes.

Popular television programmes such as Master Chef and The Great British Bake Off have been the catalyst – or many would say, the inspiration – of a renewed enthusiasm and interest in the art of cooking, baking and culinary expertise.

You may bake cakes at home, entertain families and friends on a regular basis or you have a specialist interest in Guernsey’s indigenous local dishes.  All are eligible for the Cookery section that has classes for varying age groups and cover all aspects of baking and preserves from popular Guernsey dishes, bread, cake and pastry making to the highly intricate work of cake decorating.

Entries for the preserve classes are welcomed from those who love making jam, jellies, marmalade, curds and sauces and there are quirky classes such as “Housewives’ Choice” and “Gentlemen’s Choice”.  For those whose are of interest are items that are particular to afternoon tea, there are Scones & Biscuits and Pastry classes.  There are three sections for children – 10 years and under, 11-14 years and 15-17 years.

Certificates are awarded to all entries that achieve 75 points or more and there are several trophies available to winners in various classes.
