A long-standing skill that combines speed, accuracy, and concentration, the Eisteddfod Guernsey's Shorthand section remains a valued discipline within the Eisteddfod, celebrating excellence in note-taking and transcription.
The Shorthand classes are open to all ages, with entry levels ranging from 40 words per minute through to 110 words per minute and above. Competitors are tested through short dictations, followed by a set transcription time, with accuracy and presentation forming the basis of adjudication.
Certificates are awarded at Honours or Merit level depending on accuracy, and a series of cups and trophies are presented to the top performers at each speed, including the Leadbeater Cup, Progress Cup, Valentine Trophy, Guernsey Chess Club Cup, and United Club Cup.
Regulations ensure fairness and progression, with competitors moving up in speed once a trophy has been won. Each performance is carefully assessed, offering participants the chance to benchmark their skills and celebrate achievement in this precise and rewarding discipline.
